On June 30, 2025, Lauren Samuel stepped down as Board Chair of The HOPE Program after five years of dedicated service. Lauren has been a tremendous asset to our organization and her drive to give hope to those most vulnerable led her to join the HOPE Board of Directors in 2010.
While on the Board at HOPE, Lauren simultaneously served as Board Chair of Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx) for four years, during which time she oversaw the merger of SSBx and HOPE. Her strategic foresight helped grow HOPE’s budget nearly fourfold, transforming the organization from a Brooklyn-based nonprofit into a thriving, multi-borough institution now serving both Brooklyn and the Bronx. Through her leadership, HOPE was able to:
- expand its training offerings, creating pathways to careers in the burgeoning green sector, including the launch of new transitional employment programs,
- achieve increased employer engagement,
- expand municipal and government funding,
- accomplish 59% expansion in New Yorkers served.
After serving on the Board for 10 years, Lauren was appointed Board Chair of The HOPE Program in 2020. As Chair, she led the Board and organization through the COVID-19 pandemic. Her leadership was integral during the search for our new Executive Director, providing strategic direction, steady guidance and stepping in as a resource for staff, supporting the organization through the transition.
“Lauren has been an exceptional Board Chair, and I’m honored to have had her as a partner. Her journey from volunteer to board member to Board Chair is an inspiring model for our students, alumni, staff, and the communities we serve. She leads by example, and her support has been instrumental in shaping both my leadership and our shared vision for the future.” commented Tracey Capers, Executive Director.
While Lauren has stepped down as Board Chair, she will continue to serve on our Board of Directors. Her advocacy and passion for our mission have propelled HOPE forward throughout her 15-year tenure. We are honored to have had a dedicated and extraordinary woman as the head of our Board, and incredibly proud of Lauren’s achievements and contributions to HOPE and our community at large!
